Thanks for your comment Nelson. I do know what you mean about Puppy's uniqueness and can well imagine how its smallness lends itself to low powered machines on low bandwidth connections. I just fell out with the way the community was being organised really :(

Hi

I think you have lost the whole idea for puppy linux! I come from africa and technology does not move at the same pace as the west. You must understand that puppy linux fills a niche area where people are still using pII and PIII computers. Imagine being able to browse the internet using a GPRS connection on an obsolete 200MHz computer with 128Mb ram, which by the way you have booted up using a floppy disk and then ran the OS in ram via a usb disk. Life does not get better than that.

Its impossible to compare a major distro like Derbian which comes as a multipart DVD distro to one that fits on a measly 128Mb flash disk. Here in africa I can download a new 100Mb release of puppy linux in 6 hours, and have the latest "OS" for my needs, we do not have the resources to acquire, install, and upgrade our distributions using aptitude.

I believe that Barry is one person who has shown his love for his pet PUPPY, and its yielding results. He has shown that you can come with an idea and streamline the project and run it as an individual. Kudo Barry, Puppy linux is a unique linux distro, it does not try to emulate any distro, and without the likes of Barry, Linus, and Jobs where will we be?

Thanx

Tom
I hadn,t tryed wnop2 until I had a need for something like this last month.I most say wish you were
still working on this project .I,m still having trouble getting it on USB drive but know my problem
is I,m not using the right syslinux file.A few addon,s and wnop on USB sure would fit the bill
for small form factor low power.
But anyway thanks for the work you did! It is fun to use.

Thanks for your comment Rick.

I do understand that WOOF marks a new direction for 'Puppy' (the inverted commas are beacuse I thought Barry, aka Puppy, was retiring), especially with regard to package management, but my feeling is that this is still merely a technical difference and not one that reflects an actual shift in 'Puppy's' understanding of the role which community plays in software development.

Barry is a one man show with a hobby, which is of course totally fine; it's just that I don't think that that is how the greatest operating system in the world is developed.

I`m not a programmer and agree with what you have said but I understand Barry is working on WOOF which addresses some of your concerns. Also Puppy still works great on older machines although I have been playing with TinyMe distro which is a nice compromise that uses synaptic. So many distros,so little time!
